Just a day short of what, for some, is the big holiday of the season. I know that when I am in need of some Christmas cheer, the flavor I favor most is Peppermint! The bottle I keep handy this time of year is of Peppermint Schnapps (I am rather fond of Dr. McGillicudy's).
While I covered the auld favorite Egg Nog a couple weeks back, this week's drink is its ancestor, the Flip!
Whiskey Peppermint Flip
- 1 egg
- 1/2 tsp sugar
- 1 1/2 oz Rye or Bourbon Whiskey (For this, I prefer Bourbon, but you might want the spiciness of Rye.)
- 1/2 oz Peppermint Schnapps
- 1/2 oz cream
- A dash of nutmeg
Add all the ingredients to a cocktail shaker, but leave out the ice for now. As with The Thunder you will want to give this a dry shake to whip up the egg. My "Spirit Guide" Jerry Thomas recommends whipping up the egg with the sugar and spice first (use a whisk) and then adding to the rest. Then pour back and fourth between two vessels until smoothness is obtained.
The traditional glass to serve a flip is a "sour glass", but you can use a rocks glass, sans rocks, if you must.
Enjoy and Happy Christmas to you!
